Dealing with Difficult Emotions through Mindfulness

Beginning in October I am offering  Exploring Mindfulness,  an eight-session book discussion and support group for starting, re-starting or maintaining the practice of mindfulness.

mindful1Mindfulness can be described simply as seeing clearly in the here and now. I chose Pema Chödrön’s book When Things Fall Apart as our guide because, through this book, she is a calm and reassuring voice in helping us to accept life as it is.  She is also a clear and articulate teacher with practical guidance for facing our fears, anger and loneliness.  I find her approach, which comes from the Buddhist tradition, to be extremely relevant to psychology and therapy as we practice it today.


Beginning on October 3, 2014 there will be the opportunity to take this class in person and/or through an online discussion.  One can choose from a Friday or Saturday morning class, or through a blog discussion that I will post each Saturday morning. The post will correspond to what will be covered in the Friday/Saturday classes.  One could choose to participate via the blog discussions alone, or through some combination of the blog and in person.  The minimal expectation is to read the book, but everyone is strongly encouraged to commit to a daily mindfulness meditation practice for 90 days (10/3 -12/31). It is okay if it is only five minutes a day—establishing a habit is the key to developing mindful awareness in a way that will make a difference in ones life.

In order to support a 90 day practice, after the first six sessions the next two sessions will be spaced two weeks apart.  After that there will be two more blog discussions every other week.

Each sessions will include three parts:  1) a teaching from the book or audio/visual from Pema Chödrön or some other teacher in the Shambhala school from which she comes; 2) a guided meditation practice; 3) questions, discussion and support for developing a practice.

Each group is approximately one hour and twenty minutes from the time we begin.  I have designed it so that if you can only stay an hour you can leave after the meditation practice and before the discussion.  In order to maintain the necessary concentration, though, I ask that an effort be made by each person to not arrive or leave from the start of the teaching to the completion of the meditation.

There is no cost per se, but each participant in the class is welcome to offer up to $5 per class.  Money will not be formally collected but can be placed in the “hat”.


The classes will be held at 227 North Duke Street in the city of Lancaster—halfway between Walnut & Chestnut on the left hand side. My name is on the shingle. Once in the building the group room is the 1st door to the left.   It is on-street parking and meters require 6 quarters for an hour after 8am but not on Saturdays.  I always keep quarters handy.  Lemon Street is 1 ½ blocks away and there are no meters there.

AS PART OF MY WORK WITH TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS I helped to form and serve as an advisor to the TeenHope program.

Laughing TeensTeenHope’s goal is to reduce the suffering and risk caused by depression, anxiety and other conditions effecting the lives of students. Through teaming up with schools and collaboration with other organizations we strive to:

  • Create a culture of awareness, sensitivity and early responsiveness
  • Educate students, parents, faculty and administrators about mental illness and the role schools can play in fostering well-being and early response to mental health concerns
  • Identify students who need mental health services through screening
  • Provide immediate access to services for those identified without regard to the ability to pay

Through robust relationships with our school partners we can respond to each schools particular needs by such services as: student support groups, consultation to school counselors, development of mental  health curriculum

TeenHope is run by the Samaritan Counseling Center and they produced a video which includes compelling messages from students and the personal story of a young woman who experienced depression as a teen:

Some of you know that our offices have been a part-time art gallery—the Painted Desert—on  First Fridays.  We’re taking a break now but I wanted to let you know of a related event happening in August.   The first two art shows for the Painted Desert Gallery four years ago were the photography of David Nutter followed by an exhibit of Carol Emerson’s collages.  These shows and the narrative around them have been made into a play.  Below is an adaptation of the press release for the upcoming performance.  I have had the good fortune to share space with the exhibits and to see  the first reading of the play—which were all very moving. “Death Valley: A Love Story,” a new full-length play by Lancaster-based author and playwright Sandy Asher, will be given its first public, rehearsed reading on Thursday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Tellus360, 24 E. King Street, Lancaster.

Inspired by the photographs, collages, and journals of Lancaster artist/ therapist Carol Emerson and the late psychiatrist/photographer David Nutter, “Death Valley: A Love Story” will be directed by Laura Korach Howell, executive director of The People’s Shakespeare Project and will feature well-known area actors Anne Meeder, Sharon Mellinger, and Lisa Budwig. Carol L. Woodman will serve as stage manager.

“Because this is a memory play,” Asher explains, “I wanted all of the characters and action to be filtered through the one person remembering what happened.  So all three actors play Carol at various moments, but they also play everyone else involved in the story, male and female. They transform instantly with the help of only a few props and their own inventiveness. It’s quite a challenge, but Laura has chosen her actors well.”

Development of the script began several years ago at the Painted Desert Gallery when Asher saw David Nutter’s photographs of Death Valley displayed along with snippets of prose and poetry from his journal and Carol’s.  “I was deeply moved by both the visual art and the language,” Asher recalls, “and suggested to Carol that the combination might make a wonderful book or play.  She generously allowed me to read the full journals, and the script began to take shape.”

The story taken from journal to stage begins in the winter of 2003, when, during their first joyful year of being in love, Carol and David spent a week in Death Valley.  There David took dozens of photos but also began experiencing symptoms that were diagnosed on their return home as Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.  Months of chemotherapy followed, leading in a stem cell transplant that went awry, ending David’s life.  Both kept journals throughout this ordeal, and Carol continued hers after David’s death.  The play opens and closes with slide shows created by David’s son AJ Nutter of David’s photography and Carol’s collages.

Though a personal, local story, “Death Valley” explores universal experiences of love, loss, grief, and recovery.  “Carol hopes sharing her process will prove helpful to others,” Asher says, “and I’m confident it will. Trusted friends and colleagues who have read or heard the script have encouraged us to continue working on it.  These readings are the next step.  The audiences’ responses will affect the play’s future development.”

Proceeds will benefit the Samaritan Counseling Center’s “Silent Samaritan” program. Silent Samaritans are women of compassion in the community who are able to share with women in need of professional counseling. Company Bios

SANDY ASHER‘s plays have been produced nationally and internationally and honored with an NEA grant, three AATE Distinguished Play Awards (for A Woman Called Truth, In the Garden of the Selfish Giant, and Jesse and Grace: A Best Friends Story), the Charlotte Chorpenning Award for a distinguished body of work, and an Aurand Harris Fellowship grant from the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America.  Six of her scripts are included in Tell Your Story: The Plays and Playwriting of Sandra Fenichel Asher.  Sandy lives in Lancaster City.


LAURA KORACH HOWELL is an Equity actress, a roster artist with The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and a seasoned theatre teacher and director. She received her training at Circle-in-the-Square Theatre (NYC), The Actor’s Center (NYC) and Shakespeare & Co. (Lenox, MA). She has directed professionally and taught students of all ages for over thirty years.  Laura is the founder and artistic director of the People’s Shakespeare Project.  She lives in Lancaster.


LISA BUDWIG has been active in Central Pennsylvania theatre for eight years, performing at Oyster Mill Playhouse, Theatre Harrisburg, York Little Theatre, and with The Creative Works of Lancaster.  Lisa lives in Lemoyne and acts professionally as a Standardized Patient at the Penn State Hershey School of Medicine, where she simulates patients in a variety of clinical and ethical scenarios to assist medical students in learning and practicing empathetic, patient-centered communication, diagnostic and examination skills.


ANNE MEEDER holds a B.S. degree in Speech, Communications and Theater Arts from Clarion State University.  She is a professional member of NDEO – The National Dance Education Organization. Anne works as a drama and dance educator in the Lancaster area, and her leading theatrical roles in musical theater and the opera span twenty-five years. She remains active as a dancer, actor, choreographer, singer, director and teacher while working as a teaching artist at The Fulton’s Academy of Theatre.  She lives in Lancaster City.  


SHARON MELLINGER’s extensive theater background includes work for CoMotion, Theatre of the Seventh Sister, Creative Works of Lancaster, Woodstove House,  and EPAC.  Earlier this summer, she played the nurse in the People’s Shakespeare Project production of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Laura Korach Howell.  Sharon lives in Lancaster City, works at Lancaster Dispensing Company, is a voracious reader, writer, and pedestrian, and a dedicated Cat Co-habitator.


CAROL L. WOODMAN A graduate of Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting and directing, Carol has more recently received her Pennsylvania certification as a Special Education teacher and works for Lancaster Lebanon IU13. Since moving to Lancaster in 1996, Carol has also volunteered with Dramability, a theatre group in which high school students and young adults with disabilities learn to develop their performance skills.


Real and Imagined: The paintings of Benjamin Nelson

The day that Ben came to set up his show at the gallery with Carol Emerson and I it was hot and humid–one of those days where the air conditioner seems to be heaving to catch it’s breath as it tries to lift the heavy humidity out of the dense air.  Thankfully the AC got the upper hand and the lifting and holding of Ben’s large paintings, as we placed them, viewed them and finally hung them, was bearable.  And something else seemed to cool the room despite our labors.  The blues and greens and earthy grays and browns of his paintings brought us to a quiet and shaded spot protected from the heat.  We were beside waterfalls , abstract  foaming waves, or in the shade beside a stream in the woods–we happily found ourselves surrounded by water.

We joked that he was probably hot when he chose the paintings to bring to the show.  Ben described to us his attempt to work in his studio the day before–a studio armed with only a fan to fight the heat, which lost the battle.  Ben packed up his painting supplies and left his home in inner city Philadelphia for the park along Wissahickon Creek.  He walked in the creek and placed stones to create a place to sit where most of his body was submerged.  He then created a shelf before him to serve as a table so that he could paint.  He laughed, explaining that he was no longer hot.

His arrangement was, however, imperfect and his work managed to get wet, but this was no bother to him because Ben does not paint only what he sees–he paints what he experiences, imagines and what he synthesizes with other natural settings where he has been.  The places he paints don’t exist per se, but I would say they are real–because the viewer recognizes, through the abstraction, experiences and impressions of the creeks they have waded through or the beaches they have visited. When in nature, Ben explained, he observes, sketches or takes a photo. In his studio the synthesis of the real and imagined happens as he paints. 

Isn’t this, in a sense, what we all do?  We synthesis our imaginations , memories, experiences and knowledge when we are at our best.  The real is enhanced by imagination because it becomes adaptive to the present moment and to future possibilities as opposed  calcifying.

Ben describes his work as organic.  “The subjects of inspiration are starting points for something that will become much more intensified,  as I reinterpret how I see the world we live in,”  he explains. “I view nature as a macro reservoir of an infinite number of subjects that can be explored and rendered.  These organic forms can be altered and recreated, made abstract while still remaining recognizable to their original subject. ”  To find out about Ben’s First Friday July 6th show and see another of his paintings visit the Painted Desert Galley.

Ministry Assessment Program (MAP)

In addition to my work as a therapist in my own practice, I coordinate the Ministry Assessment Program (MAP) at the Samaritan Counseling Center where I have worked for sixteen years. MAP assists leaders in various religious denominations to discern which candidates seeking ordination have an authentic vocation in ministry and are psychologically and emotionally sound enough to proceed. Our evaluations are just one part of a rigorous vetting and formation process.  It can go on for several years with personal, academic, and theological reviews and tests at different stages along the way.

You can imagine, then, what it feels like to be a candidate coming to a psychologist for an interview about very personal things and to undergo extensive psychological testing—intimidating to say the least.  It is important then, that the evaluator approaches this process with respect and consideration for the feelings and privacy of the candidate.  The fact is that the vast majority of those who come before us are sound psychologically and many are talented and experienced to boot.  We hope, then, to give them something for their trouble— to create  an experience for  them that will help them to better understand themselves and to help them grow while at the same time encouraging  them.

Sometimes candidates have an experience during the process that is not all that different than what clients experience in therapy.  Though the expressed purpose of the process is evaluative not therapeutic, in my experience some of the best assessments turn out to be therapeutic as well. If I listen to the candidate attentively and appreciatively, candidates often find the words to say who they really are and why they are on their particular spiritual journey.

I am reminded of a young man who was surprised to find his eyes filling up with tears when he told me about how deeply affected he was by the hymns in his childhood church. “I had a lot of energy “, he recalled, “was nervous and insecure.  The songs told me that I and other people were important.” I wanted to get across, in the report, the depth of the emotional connection with God and others that he conveyed to me. I wrote, “Music seems tap in to his emotional and spiritual core—the part of his experience that he finds hard to articulate.”  It wasn’t that he felt called to music ministry. He is an energetic advocate for social justice who sees evangelism as creating a sense of community outside the church walls in the inner-city neighborhood of his church.  His high energy, though, could at times be a liability—sometimes leaving him tense and restless. Music was a potentially quieting experience for him and a pathway of his spiritual life.  One of the recommendations I gave was, then, for him to “foster this part of himself, perhaps through using music as a regular practice of prayer.”

I hope that I am getting across that a good assessment captures the “person” not just data—that in the right environment candidates sense it is safe to talk about what’s most important to them.  And as one would expect in this work what is most important is often a meaningful  relationship with God and others, or the sense of being a part of “something larger than oneself”.  As I wrote in a previous post on therapy and spirituality,  I hope to grasp  “something in the client’s voice, cadence or metaphors that suggest something of faith. And with patience and gentleness the therapist, without being intrusive, may welcome the subtle spirit into the session”.  It is not the role of a psychological evaluation to judge a person’s theology or beliefs, but I would fail to know them if I did not come to understand what these things mean to them.

I have learned to take the stance that  James and Melissa Griffith wrote about in their book  Encountering the Sacred in Psychotherapy: How to talk with people about their spiritual lives. They try to “stay in the position of an anthropologist meeting another person in an unknown culture….The skills most helpful for opening therapy to the spiritual and religious domains have been those for preparing our own selves to meet someone not yet known- the fostering within ourselves of curiosity, wonder and openness to the being of the other.”

As the  candidates receive feedback several weeks later and eventually a copy of the final report, we hope to mirror back to them their hopes, fears, gifts as well as the places they may be in  need of healing or growth. When we are successful,  we have done it in a way to preserves their dignity and they feel like we “got them”.
